Hello, seniors!
Serving
as your class and a SPURS sorority alumni advisor, I've had the opportunity to
have some great conversations with current students. I've heard several
of you talk about taking a "gap year," a term no one used
when I was a student. I had to look it
up and
have to say it sounds like a great idea. Who wouldn't like a year or so
off between school and work or grad school? But it turns
out "gap year" isn't supposed to be a lie-on-the-beach
vacation; the goal is to be productive, using the time to learn a new
skill, volunteer with a nonprofit, or explore a potential career field. My fellow advisor, Dr. Harry Wallace, calls it a “year of
enlightenment,” which I rather like. I also discovered there are
plenty of organizations and companies willing to help you decide how to fill
that gap. I highly recommend you visit with Dr. Brian Hirsch, the director of TU's Career Services. He and his staff can
help you pinpoint the program or opportunity that best suits you. Now, if
I could only figure out how to take a mid-career gap year.
Shameless plug #1: My organization, San Antonio Sports, invites you to volunteer for the Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon next week, Nov. 9, 10 and/or 11. We still need volunteers at the expo on Friday and Saturday and at the start and finish lines on Sunday. Even if you can't volunteer, please show up along the route somewhere and cheer on the 25,000 runners. Of course, you could always run, walk or bike the event.
Shameless
plug #2: San Antonio Sports and Trinity are co-hosting the NCAA DIII Men's
& Women's Soccer Championships Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at Blossom Soccer
Stadium. Support the TU teams as they fight through the playoffs for a
shot at the national title. If they make the championship tournament,
please come out and support them. Go Tigers!
